Context to MFA

Prior to starting the MFA course I had been working professionally as an artist for the past 9 years, primarily working on public art commissions. Due to the nature of public art commissions I was often working to a client’s very specific brief.  My decision to study for an MFA was born from the desire to write my own brief and explore more fully the consequences and the development of my artistic practice by working in this way.

I had also found that due to many of my previous public art commissions being permanent public sculptures there was a necessity to use fabricators to create my designs and this often left me leaving disconnected from the making process. As well as exploring the depths of my own practice, another of my aims during this two year MFA was to experiment with materials and making processes in order to open up my ideas and knowledge of what was possible.

Stage 4 - ‘Maintained (RCMP)’ – Exploration into Video Art

Stage 5 - ‘Groomed’ – Exploration into Screen-printing

The following pages document my process in achieving these aims over the past two years by looking at the core themes that have come to define my work.
